By Tammy Pitts, Director of Communications and Marketing
Michigan Nonprofit Association is growing by leaps and bounds! We’re proud to welcome Claire Horlings to our organization as our new Business Development Officer. In this role, she is responsible for all business development activities including membership cultivation and retention, network growth, customer service strategy and sales. We’re impressed by the depth of experience and passion for the nonprofit sector that Claire has and having her on our team is a great honor. So, what should you know about Claire? For starters, she’s a foodie!
What do you like to do for fun?
“I love to eat- I am definitely a foodie so going to some of my favorite local restaurants, especially Mexican food, and I love Korean food—the spicier, the better! That is something that I look forward to. I also enjoy exercising because it helps me blow off stress and allows me to eat what I want. And I am an avid reader. I love reading biographies- I also love reading historical fiction. In the fall time, I especially love going and getting my favorite pumpkin spice doughnuts at Robinette’s (located in Grand Rapids) and taking walks and hearing the crunch of leaves under my feet.”
What are you looking forward to while working at MNA?
“I'm really looking forward to learning more about all the amazing nonprofits in the state. Having worked in the nonprofit sector in West Michigan, I'm very familiar with the extraordinary work being done by nonprofits in my community to serve the people of West Michigan. I know that that the level of commitment and the vision and the transformative work being done across the state is what makes our state one of the most incredible states to live in in this country. The level of philanthropy that you see here in Michigan is unique. I’m looking forward to learning more about the stories of nonprofits statewide. I’m looking forward to building relationships and helping nonprofits understand how much we are advocating for them and how much benefit they can receive from a membership. I’m also looking forward to helping MNA strengthen its messaging about the benefits and advocacy that we offer to nonprofits across Michigan.”
A lot of us have pets here at MNA--tell us about your fur babies!
Fur babies are wonderful because they are always happy to see you. Pets really exemplify what unconditional love and acceptance are. I have my girl, Izzy, who is a shih-poo-- she’s about 10 years old now. And then we have a rescue dog named Rudy (about age 8) who’s got more personality than we can really handle (laughs). We actually rescued him from South Korea which is where I was born. So yeah, they keep me busy. It’s nice to have them near my feet when I’m working during the day, and yeah, they bring a lot of joy.
“True happiness is not attained through self-gratification, but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.” - Helen Keller
